How the list maker works

Everything happens in your browser. Your ticks are saved on this device only (in your browser's local storage) so the list is still there when you come back; nothing is sent to us. Use Share on a phone to send the list straight to a messaging app, or Print for a paper copy with tick boxes.

Not sure what something is called? Each item links back to its full entry in the names lists, which include regional alternatives. For example, tapioca is kappa in most of Kerala but also maracheeni, and the oil sardine is mathi or chaala depending on the district.

Tips for a Kerala grocery list

  • Write shallots as cheriya ulli (small onion). Asking for "ulli" alone may get you large onions.
  • For rice, say which kind: matta (red parboiled), pachari (raw) or puzhukkalari (parboiled). See the rice varieties guide.
  • Bananas have many names; nendran is the long cooking and frying banana. See the banana varieties guide.
  • Check the season calendar before adding fruit; in-season produce is fresher.
